Breastfeeding is often perceived as a logical next stage after the birth which is meant to come easy as it is ‘natural to breastfeed’. \nAs is with the birth\, giving breastfeeding good thought and preparing for it before the arrival of the baby can empower and help see any hurdles that may arise along the way exactly as that: challenges that can be overcome with care and support. \nAims: To enable mothers to feel positive and encouraged that they and their babies have the ability to breastfeed\, to enable fathers/partners to feel positive about their ability to support the breastfeeding pair. \nLearning Outcomes \nParticipants will be able to: \n1. Have an understanding of how milk is made and how breastfeeding works. Be able to tell if the baby is getting enough milk\, and how to prepare for postnatal checks at home. \n2. Understand how to establish and protect milk supply if the baby is not yet ready to breastfeed; know where to find reliable help for breastfeeding challenges. \n3. Demonstrate a range of breastfeeding positions with a prop. \n4. Identify evidence-based sources of information and support and know what to expect as normal newborn behaviour.

Building on the success of the live streamed baby massage sessions delivered during #IWD 2025 the emphasis for this Baby Week activity is on sharing the well evidenced benefits of baby massage for parents and babies. \nNew Parents\, Carers\, Mums-to-be \n\nOn 17 November at 11.00 GMT there will be a free baby massage class providing an ideal introduction to the practicalities and benefits of baby massage. It is a useful session for new mums\, carers or mums-to-be. No baby is required. Just some curiosity and an interest in learning more about the power of baby massage. However\, if you have a baby then you get some hands-on practice with an expert tutor online.\n\nWorkforce Development \n\nOn November 17\, there will be a second FREE online session aimed at healthcare professionals. This session\, 19.30 – 20.00 GMT\, will consist of a short talk on some of the benefits and tips for the healthcare professionals\, students and volunteers working in maternity and early years settings. This is an ideal introduction for anyone who wants to understand more about the very real health and wellbeing benefits of baby massage for both parents and babies and how they can contribute to increasing access to baby massage.\n\nImproving Me’s NHS Director Catherine McClennan said\, ‘We are keen to convey one clear message\, baby massage is a simple\, safe and effective tool for supporting a baby’s early development and improving mum’s wellbeing.’ \nBee Happy co-founder\, Sonya Elnaschie adds. ‘Baby massage can help promote bonding\, improve sleep\, and aid digestion. It can also support a baby’s sensory and motor development\, as well as enhance relaxation by lowering stress hormones.’ \nIn addition\, for parents\, baby massage can increase confidence\, reduce parental stress and strengthen the relationship with their child through nurturing touch and non-verbal communication. It also stimulates the release of the “Happy Hormones\,” or feel-good neurotransmitters\, including dopamine\, serotonin\, endorphins\, and oxytocin. She also works within social prescribing\, which aims to give people access to non-clinical services to support their health and wellbeing. Sonya will deliver the parent session. \nAmy is a Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist and Programme Leader in Physiotherapy at the University of Hertfordshire. She works in the field of neuro-developmental paediatrics and with a wide range of babies and young children with developmental difficulties. DESCRIPTION:Drop-in group for parents and carers with babies pre-crawling babies (newborn up to around 6-8 months old). \nCuddlers is a dedicated low key\, safe space for you to start getting out with your new baby\, and to feel comfortable putting very tiny babies down (if they’ll let you!) to enjoy a conversation over a hot drink and cake. \nAs well as being a welcoming and inclusive social group\, we provide evidence-based information and support to help you navigate life with your new baby. Our trained Infant Feeding & Sleep Counsellor and Peer-Supporters are always ready to lend a non-judgemental and empathetic ear to anything on your mind\, there are no silly questions or worries. From getting started with breastfeeding to stopping when the time is right for you and any little bumps along the way\, as well as using infant formula and bottles\, introducing solid food\, infant sleep\, adjusting to motherhood\, returning to work\, and choosing/using slings & baby carriers. \nOptional £2 donation.
