The Power of Play Streets: Supporting Children’s Right to Play In Our Neighbourhoods – (webinar)

Play is one of the most important parts of childhood. But what happens when children have fewer opportunities to play right where they live?

Join us for this Lunch & Learn webinar to explore how Play Streets are creating safe, welcoming spaces for children to have fun, be active and feel part of their neighbourhoods and wider communities.

Play Streets are temporary road closures that give children and families space to be outdoors, connect, and spend time together close to home. These simple events are especially valuable in areas with limited access to green spaces or other play opportunities, helping to support healthier childhoods and reduce inequalities.

From physical and mental health to confidence and social skills, the benefits of play extend far beyond having fun. In fact, play is so important to children’s development and wellbeing that it’s recognised as a fundamental right in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Building on the findings of the 2025 Play Commission report, we’ll explore why creating opportunities for play matters now more than ever, and how initiatives such as Play Streets are helping to put play back at the heart of neighbourhood life.

Hear from Rebecca James, Public Health Specialist at Bradford Council, and Adele Adams, Project Manager at Better Place Bradford, who will share examples of Play Streets from across Bradford, the benefits they bring to children and families, and practical tips on how to start your own, or help residents start one in your own community.
